TITLE: REFLECTION ON TRIP TO MACRITCHIE RESERVOIR.
On 2809809 we went to the Macritchie Reservoir. I had been there once, also for a learning journey and thought this trip would be really boring. But, it turns out that it was quite fun. Quite as i was seperated from my friends. I just can't understand why not the boys? i learn alot of stuff there and most of them are not even covered in the textbook!Ms Kang pointed out many different types of plants to us - the Villians And Heroes. Villians as in plants such as the Smillex and Heroes such as the Rhodo Dendrum. Overall, i find this trip quite useful because last time i didn't even know let alone realise that leaves actually have drip tips. i just leave them unnoticed! And if there is another of such trips, i wish that we would have more time in the reserve as i want to explore more of Macritchie Reservoir.
~PEIRU[2]- In order to find out the age of a tree, we usually find the difference of the diameter of that tree in one year, and calculate the age by dividing the diameter. But, it won’t be so accurate, because, as the tree get older, it will grow faster than when it was young..
We could not see the age of tree on the ring they have, as tree in rainforest won’t have rings on it trunk. This is because the rings are made by the big difference of four seasons.
- Rasam are aggressive, Although thafter a lot of them died, it grows new ones on top of the dead one, as the dead one actually gives fertilizer for their growth.
- Harry Clidenia also grow very fast, but once they don’t receive sunlight, they will die.
- We also found an interesting plant, called “Terangtan” when its young, the leaves was like a mickey mouse’s ear, but as it grows older, it will become usual leaves, but will have ears on top.
- Tree on the rainforest will bend so much and also grow very high as they want to receive sunlight
- We could see red leaves in the evergreen rainforest, because that leaves are young leaves, and they haven’t ready yet to make their own food. And by having this characteristic, they protect themselves from caterpillars, as their leaves are not yet tasty.
On 28th of August, we went to Mac Ritchie Reservoir. There, I learnt a lot about rainforest. Instead of just learning the theory and seeingthe picture from our textbooks, we could experienced the real evidence of whatever happens inside the rainforest.. For example, the layers of the forest- emergent, canopy and undergrowth. while we were walking on the path, which is undergrowth layer, we could really feel that the undergrowth do not receive much sunlight. Moreover, there are a lot of things not mentioned in our books that we could take a look and study at. I enjoyed walking on the path which is available for us to walk in the forest. During the trip, we could see a lot of different plants, ferns, trees. Each of particular plant has different character and specialties. We also could see many monkeys there, we are not allowed to feed them, as to train them to find their own food and depend on themselves.

On the 28th August 2009, our class have a learning journey to Macritchie Reservoir. it was fun yet tiring experience. We managed to learn alot about nature reserves. As part of its conservation efforts, the Singapore government has set aside these areas covered by rainforest as nature reserves. i really like the golden rules; which was cute: TAKE NOTHING BUT PHOTOGRAPHS, LEAVE NOTHING BUT FOOTSTEPS. I was really amazed and shocked about the part whereby our teacher explained to us about therattan which was manufactured and used as cane for the prisoners. i learnt many interesting stuffs and enjoyed the trip.. The nature reserves are beautiful and scenic, providing the locals and tourists alike a place to visit and learn more about the natural world. Therefore, it is everyone's part to ensure that it is safe and clean by not littering the place.

RAINFOREST
EMERGENTS-THE GIANTS:
•consist of very large trees that grow above the canopy. it can grow up to a height ranging from 45-55m whereas some species can grow up to 70-80m.
•they have buttress roots to support their heavy, strong trunks
•they are grown close together and compete against each others for sunlight.
CANOPY-THE CENTRE:
•consist of most majority of trees growing from a height of 30-45m.
•the trees interlock toform a leaf over, or otherwise known as the canopy.
•the canopy blocks out 70-100% of sunlight thus, making the forest cool,n=moist and shady.
•houses 50% of plant species.
•Lianas are common in this part of the forest. they are woody climbers they twine around tree trunksor hang down from branches as loop.
•Epiphydetes are plants that grow in the trees to recieve more sunlight. examples are ferns such as BIRD NEST FERN AND STAGHORN FERNS.
UNDERSTORY-THE MEDIATOR:
•lies between the canopy and forest floor
•homes to many animals.[e.g. birds, snakes, lizards, and predators such as jaguars]
•the leaves are much larger and there are more insects.
•growth here is very dense. and it is very dark as the canopy blocks out most of the sunlight.
FORESTFLOOR- THE GREEN CARPET:
•the most bottom layer of the forest.
•receives only 2% of sunlight.
•only certain speices of plants can adapt in this layer.
•decaying plants and animals disappear faster as the humid conditions promote rapid decay.
•it actually takes 20 minutes for rain to touch this layer.

WHY CONSERVE FOREST WHEN WE ARE SHORT OF PLACE?
Forests plays an important part in this world. Lacking of places is not a problem cause by too many forests in this world but by humans'
greediness for more lands when they had enough.
Forest are important as we had yet to uncover all the plants in these universe and forest may house them.
Some undiscovered plants may have medicinal properties to slow down or even cure incurable dieases such as Cancer or AIDS
Animals such as the two-toed sloth are on the trip to becoming extinct. by protecting the forest we in turn are also protecting these manificent creatures.
Forest also helps our country to earn money.
When tourist comes to Singapore, Singaporeans who owned stores in these reservoir/Forest will make money as tourist buys from their shops.
When they earn more money, singaporeans would be able to pay more tax and Singapore would become richer.
AND THAT IS WHY WE CONSERVE FOREST WHEN WE ARE SHORT OF PLACE
